Now, before we dive into this, just know that this does not mean that we’ll see this phone in the near future. Chances are that you’ll never see this phone. You want to take news involving patents with a grain of salt. This just means that the company wants to secure this concept in the event that it wants to revisit it. The patent was submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in January this year, and it was published just yesterday. The phone in question will be a typical slab phone with a typical front display. However, there will be another display on the back of the phone to give added functionality.

The phone’s rear display will actually be transparent

Now, we’ve seen phones with rear displays before; they’re rare, but not non-existent. There are phones like the ZTE Nubia series that have full-on displays on the back that you can use and some older phones with E-ink rear panels. Samsung is taking a page from those phones’ book with this patent. Just like the aforementioned phones, this phone will have an accompanying display on the back. Looking at the patent images, the screen will occupy most of the back of the phone. It looks like it will stretch from the bottom to the tap wrapping around the camera module. This is different from the ZTE phone whose display stops at its camera module. The images show us some of the uses of this rear panel. One can use it as a viewfinder when using the rear camera. This will aid people in taking selfies. Also, we see that it will also display the Samsung logo in different locations. However, what is most remarkable about this display is that it’s planned to be transparent. This means that when it’s turned off, it’ll blend into the back glass when it’s off. This could mean that it could have any design on the back, like Borra Purple glass, and the display can lay on top of it. When it’s off, you’ll be able to see the back glass as normal. As interesting as this may seem, a phone with a transparent rear display might not be a thing for some time. However, who knows what the Korean giant will unveil next?
